A King’s Coronation, Millbridge Court

One of the things we often get asked as Wedding Photographers, is: “What happens if it rains?” and I totally get it. Months and sometimes even years - can go into planning that all important special day. And, it shouldn’t be outside the realms of possibility - that a Saturday in late Spring - should be warm and sunny - shouldn’t it?

Well, as we know, if one thing is certain about event planning in Britain - is that the weather is categorically uncertain - and I’m pretty sure a fair few wedding albums from ‘23 will feature an umbrella or two…

And that’s what R&J at their wedding day had to contend with - of course, they had one extra surprise too - their wedding date perfectly aligned with the Coronation of King Charles III. The data scientists were smug - the last four coronations prior to this one - it has rained - in true British fashion - so the odds were against us!

Unfortunately, this Coronation day would be no exception to the trend, Millibridge Court - a modern barn conversion, on the border between Surry and Hampshire - is one of those venues that could look beautiful in every season - come rain or shine.

The subtle, delicate pastel colour scheme distracted from the grey skies outside and, trust me when I say that the weather couldn’t dampen the excitement of the day.

The moral of the story? My number one advice would be to embrace the unplanned rain, however there are a few things we can always do to help the day unfold smoothly:

  1. Come prepared - ask your wedding venue for the rainy weather contingency plans - every venue will most likely have one and this will help you keep at ease knowing there’s already a plan.

  2. Don’t panic - a lot of of the wedding photos can be done in an alternative setting - usually a covered arbour or terrace. Confetti shots can always be done in the ceremony room too.

  3. Adapt the plan - the photography shoot list can be changed around quite easily to help realign timings and make use of any gaps in the clouds and a break in the rain clouds!
